    • Mission Briefing

During this course we're going to use Minecraft and 3D Printing to learn about methods of problem solving, structural engineering and take on a real challenge. You'll design structures in Minecraft with your classmates and 3D print your creations!

    • Don't fight forces, use them.

      Buckminster Fuller

    • 3D Printing 101

What if you could turn your Minecraft creations into real physical objects? That's exactly what 3D Printing will empower you to do!

      Complexity is Free

With subtractive manufacturing, complexity can get expensive and sometimes even impossible. Additive manufacturing means that we can now manufacture complex designs without much added cost or wastes.

    • What I cannot create, I do not understand.

      Richard Feynman

    • Design Challenge: Straw Architecture

You have 100 straws, 3 rolls of tape and 60 minutes to create something awesome. Top team wins 3D Printed badge.

      1

      Plan

Sketch out different ideas and concepts using pencil + paper.

      2

      Build

Experiment with your favorite designs and ideas.

      3

      Rebuild

Improve your structure after gathering feedback.

    • You've completed level 1!

Today we've gone over mission briefing, learned about 3D Printing and completed our first design challenge.

    • Humans are the greatest builders on Planet Earth

Check out this construction site in Virtual Reality! Notice how much effort goes into preparing the foundation and all the materials/machines involved.

    • The Building Blocks of Structures

      Beam

A structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to the beam's axis. Its mode of deflection is primarily by bending. The loads applied to the beam result in reaction forces at the beam's support points.

      Truss

structure that "consists of two-force members only, where the members are organized so that the assemblage as a whole behaves as a single object"

      Column

A structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements below. In other words, a column is a compression member.

    • "How much does your building weigh, Mr. Foster?"

      - R. Buckminster Fuller

    • Design Challenge: Minecraft Bridge

Use Minecraft to build a bridge that uses beams, columns and trusses.

    • You've completed level 2!

      Congratulations young wizard.

    • Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a framework of thought that helps designers and creators solve problems.

      1

      Empathize

Seek to understand who/what you're building for. This involves non-judgemental interviewing and discussion.

      2

      Define

After empathizing, it's time to come up with a picture of your end users. Create a persona.

      3

      Ideate

Time to brain storm ideas and concepts for the persona you previously defined.

      4

      Prototype

Time to create mock ups and prototypes of your idea stage. Keep the prototypes simple.

      5

      Test

Time to test your prototypes! Use feedback and ask questions about what did and did not work.

    • Design Challenge

Your team is tasked with designing a chair for one of four personas. Upon completing the chair, it's time to build it in Minecraft with your team!

    • You've completed level 3!

      Congratulations young wizard.

    • Final Project

It's time to start your final project! Create a structure in Minecraft that uses the principles of structural engineering and is 3D Printable.
